Hope I saved someone out there a little time! Took me an entire day of Googling to figure out something that works on Sierra TODAY because I can't wait for an unknown number of months for Karabiner to get updated for Sierra due to my job. Lastly, I tried Ukelele (free) which doesn't have the most friendly interface and would not remap the caps lock key for me, although it did seem to work for other keys but I didn't explore the app much because it wouldn't do what I needed it to. However, if you're looking for a free option right this second that works on a MacBook's built-in keyboard, this is a viable option. I was able to get this very early version partially working and remapping caps lock to backspace, but the app did not play nice with my external keyboard's function/media keys so I had to uninstall it. Besides eschewing the OS X moniker, Sierra finally brings Siri to the Mac, alongside picture-in.
